COS1511 is an introduction, which leads people to expect it to be gentle. It is not especially gentle, and the reason is not the difficulty of any single idea.
It is the pace. New concepts arrive weekly and each one assumes the last was understood. Miss a week and you are not one topic behind, you are trying to learn something built on a foundation you do not have. That is why students describe the module as fine and then suddenly impossible: the point where it stops making sense is usually well after the point where the gap opened.
The other reason is that programming punishes small errors severely. A misplaced semicolon or a stray bracket produces a wall of error messages that appear to have nothing to do with what you typed. Learning to read those messages is a skill nobody is taught explicitly, and until you have it, every small mistake feels like a catastrophe.
Distance study fails on schedule far more often than on difficulty.
Nobody notices when you fall behind. There is no room you have to be in on a Tuesday. The work is always something that can start tomorrow, and then the assignment is due and there are three weeks of material between you and being able to attempt it.
A standing session with someone expecting you solves a problem that has nothing to do with the content. It is unglamorous, and it is frequently the thing that decides whether someone passes.
Most students stuck on this module are stuck on one or two specific misunderstandings rather than on programming as a whole.
You cannot find those alone, because by definition you do not know which part you have wrong. It is nearly always something small and identifiable: what a loop counter is doing on the last pass, what happens to a variable when a function ends, why a condition is true when it plainly should not be.
Finding it takes minutes with someone watching you work, and can take weeks by yourself. That is most of the value of tutoring, and it is why sessions are spent with you writing code rather than with anyone lecturing.

I have already failed once. Is that a problem? No, and it is common. Repeating the module with support is a different experience from repeating it the same way and hoping for a better result.
I have never programmed before. Is that a problem? No. That is the position the module assumes, and it is the position most students are in.
What if I am already behind? Then say so at the start. Catching up is a normal starting point and the sessions are planned around where you actually are rather than where the schedule says you should be.
